Explore Oak Island’s Dog-Friendly Beaches
If you’re wondering if you can have dogs on the beaches in Oak Island, NC, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. All of Oak Island’s beaches allow pups to roam off-leash from October 15 – March 15, and on-leash the rest of the year. There are a few rules to remember, though.
- Rule 1: All dogs must be provided with fresh water and shade. Remember, if the sand is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your dog’s precious paws. Consider freezing a few bottles of water so as they melt you can continuously provide fresh, cold water. Outfitting your pup with cooling vests and protective footwear can be helpful, too.
- Rule 2: Aggressive dogs must be removed from the beach immediately.
- Rule 3: Owners must promptly dispose of all animal waste, so be sure to pack the doggie bags in your beach gear.
We want our 14 miles of beautiful shoreline to be a place where everyone can have fun, and by following these simple rules, whether you’re at Caswell Beach, Yaupon, East, or West Beach, you’re guaranteed to have a great day.
Paw-some Activities Beyond the Beach
Beyond easy, pet-friendly beach access, your trip to Oak Island has lots of fun things to do with your pet. Here are our top picks for parks, restaurants, and activities.
Dog Parks
There are two primary dog parks that are easy to visit during your Oak Island vacation. So, when you need to let them burn off some energy away from the sand or let them socialize after spending the day in your dog-friendly vacation rental, be sure to check these out!
Salty Dog Park – Located at 4410 Fish Factory Road SE, just over the bridge from Oak Island, this park features a large green space with plenty of shade where your pup can run free, play fetch, and sniff until their heart’s content. Be sure to bring your own water and bowl.
Hannon A. Templeton Park – This slightly smaller park is located directly on Oak Island and is open from dawn to dusk. When you just need a quick getaway to let them roam, it’s the perfect place. Check it out at NE 41st Street and Oak Island Drive.
Pet-Friendly Restaurants
With how many awesome restaurants have dog-friendly patios, you’d think Oak Island was made just for pet owners. Whether you want fresh fish, a cold beer, or a delicious burger, you can find a pet-friendly restaurant to suit whatever you’re craving.
Bob’s Dogs – This casual eatery offers outdoor seating and a menu that feels like the perfect 4th of July cookout. Choose from classic dogs to seasonal treats when you visit with your pooch.
Shagger Jacks – Enjoy a seafood feast at this Oak Island favorite. From fresh tuna poke to fried oyster platters, if you’re craving a fresh catch, this is the place to go. You can even sneak a bite of a French fry to your pup while you’re dining on the patio.
Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill – Bring the whole family to this oceanfront restaurant and dine with your toes in the sand. Again, remember to check the sand temps before deciding to bring your pet along.
Fishy Fishy Café – Enjoy dinner from the dock as the sun sets over the water. You may even spot a dolphin jumping in the distance! Fishy Fishy offers elevated dishes served with a casual coastal simplicity.
Rusty Hooks Dockside Grill – Cut a rug with your pooch while you enjoy live music at this coastal restaurant.
These are just five of the incredible dog-friendly restaurants on Oak Island. If you don’t see your favorite spot listed here and are wondering if they allow pets, chances are, if there’s outdoor seating, you’re good to go. But you can always call ahead and check just to be sure.
